Tonga Basket - Extra Large

The Tonga people handcrafted These beautiful baskets in the remote Binga district of Northern Zimbabwe. Tonga women use traditional weaving techniques to create intricate patterns with an over-and-under style, finishing with a coiled rim and distinctive herringbone pattern. Each basket, with a 22-26" diameter, is made from locally harvested materials such as wild grasses, small vines, and palm leaves dyed with tree bark. A 16-inch basket can take around two weeks to complete. Initially used for winnowing grains, these fairly traded baskets support families in developing countries and help preserve traditional crafts.
